(a) Competitive matches
Referees for matches in the Under 9 age group and above are organised by the GHFA and NWSWS. The cost of referees are included in players' registration fees.
Whilst an effort is made to organise official referees and assistant referees (linesmen) for all competition matches, this is not always possible because there are not usually enough referees to cover all matches. In these cases it is necessary for the coach or manager of the relevant teams to arrange for someone to referee the match. The normal practice is for the two opposing teams to appoint a referee for one half of the match. For most junior matches the referee will ask each team manager to allocate a linesman.
Managers can determine whether a referee has been allocated to their team by visiting the Gladesville Hornsby Soccer Referees website at www.isport.com.au/soccer/ghsra/.
Whilst official referees and assistant referees cannot be appointed to all matches, it is worthwhile noting that GHFA enjoys one of the highest percentages of match coverage - significantly higher than many other districts. It is Thornleigh Thunder FC's policy to encourage referees as much as possible and we expect players and supporters to accept referee's decisions without criticism or abuse. Refereeing is usually a thankless task and if we want to continue to enjoy official referees at competition matches we need to ensure that we do all we can to encourage the ones we have by not making it a torrid experience.
Non-competitive matches
Official referees are not appointed to matches in the Under 6 to Under 8 age groups. Therefore, coaches and managers of these teams need to appoint someone to referee one half of each match. Your opponents will be responsible for appointing someone to referee the other half of the match.
Thornleigh Thunder FC Junior Referee program
In previous years, Thunder FC has offered players from u12, u13 and u14 teams the opportunity to referee mini soccer games, and the program has been very successful.
However, the introduction of Small Sides Games for u6 and u7 year olds in 2008 will bring a whole new format to mini soccer, with different sized fields, smaller teams and different rules to follow. As Small Sided Games will be a new learning experience for Thunder FC, the Committee expects 2008 to be a period of familiarisation with how to organise and referee Small Sided Games. Therefore, the Thunder FC Junior Referee Program unfortunately will not be available in 2008, however we hope to reinstate the Program in 2009.
Referees Courses
Anyone who is interested in becoming a referee or finding out more about the rules of soccer are encouraged to attend a referees course. Details to be advised.
