
General Information about Teams available at Thornleigh Cricket
Playing In the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai & Hills District Cricket Association (HK&HDCA)
Have-A-Go Cricket
- Played on Friday evenings 6.15pm -7.30pm at Thornleigh West School Oval.
- Starts first Friday after commencement of Daylight Saving. Runs during school terms and finishes around mid March.
- Groups performing different tasks rotating (to keep interest). Some batting,
bowling, fielding, catching etc.
- A lot of parental involvement required to ensure well run activities. Training
and parent in-service provided.
- Child receives bat, ball, hat, Milo sample, stickers and CD game.
- Opportunity to be part of “on ground” entertainment at ING/Test matches.
- Two twilight Saturdays where groups can compete with other centres.
Under 9's
- Played on Saturday mornings - two time slots 8am and 10.30am
- Need 8 - 10 players for a team - boys/girls
- Bat and bowl on the same day (16 overs a side)
- Bat in pairs, each pair batting for 4 overs. Each player bowls 2 overs.
- Non competition, but results are published in local paper.
- Total runs scored are divided by number of outs.
- A softer composite ball is used.
- Parental help required with umpiring (training given), managing and scoring.
Under
10's
- Played on Saturday mornings over two weekends (unless a one day match) - 36
overs to be played
- Need 10 - 12 players for a team - boys/girls
- Bat in pairs. If a batsman is dismissed the player retires, but if the player has not been dismissed they can go back in once all the other players have been dismissed.
- Fielding team consists of 8 players who can be rotated to give everyone a go
- Each player must bowl 2 overs with a max. of 4 overs.
- Non competition, but results are published in local paper.
- Total runs are divided by number of outs.
- A softer composite ball is used.
- Parental help required for umpiring (training given), managing and scoring.
Under 11 - 16's
- Real Competition played over two weekends (unless one day match)
- A real cricket ball is used - a protector must be worn, and helmets when batting
- A kit is provided by the Club but often own equipment is used.
- Bowling restrictions apply (to protect against back injury)
- Results will be published in local paper
- Team should consist of 12 players (usually just boys)
- Parental help required for umpiring (more training given), managing & scoring.
Girls' Cricket
- Played in age groups U/12, U/14 & U/16
- U/12 has similar rules to Under 10's above and use a composite ball. U/14-16
use a hard ball
- Results are also published in local paper.
- Parental involvement required for managing, umpiring and scoring.
Women's Cricket
- Is played under Northern Districts Grade Club - 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th grade.
- Real cricket ball and real competition.
- Results published in local paper and Sydney Morning Herald.
Senior Cricket
- Played over two weekends (unless one day match)
- Team to consist of at least 12 players of similar standard. A rating is given by
HK&HDCA to grade players.
- A kit and balls are provided by Club
- Results to be phoned through after each day and they are published by HK&HDCA
- At least one member of a team should hold a Captain's ticket (course provided by
HK&HDCA). Useful if team members know the playing rules.
- Semis & finals usually held over a weekend each.
Representative Cricket
- Starts at U/10 and goes through to U/23 and Masters
- Played on Sundays usually starting around October (6 matches plus trials matches & semis/finals).
- Trials usually begin around September and players are nominated by Club.
- Played at HK&HDCA level with home/away matches - can be some travelling.
- Played with real cricket ball and official umpires.
